PARENT INVOLVEMENT & FAMILY LEARNING: A Recipe for School Success

  • Remember: students with involved parents are more likely to earn better grades, attend school regularly, have better social skills and go on to higher education.

  • Monitor children's out-of-school activities, including television and computer time. Set and maintain consistent family routines for bedtime, chores and homework.

  • Make "learning" a topic of conversation in the community, wherever neighbors and friends gather.

  • When you attend parent-school or family learning activities, pick up extra hand outs to share with a parent that could not attend.

  • Always ask your child about his or her school day.

  • Prepare notes and questions to ask at the parent-teacher conference.

  • Help your child organize notebooks and folders. Keep old tests and quizzes in a specific folder for future studying and to monitor progress.

  • Have high expectations. Watch for signs of failure and frustration. Reward progress!
